History Behind the Day

Established by the UN in 1999 to commemorate the 1960 assassination of the Mirabal sisters in the Dominican Republic, who were activists against dictatorship.

Throughout the day, SSRLTL organizes poster-making, debates, and essay competitions on themes such as “Respect for All” and “Empower, Educate, End Violence.” Students actively participate, spreading messages of compassion, equality, and empowerment. The observance of the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women at SSRLTL reinforces the values of unity, awareness, and social responsibility—encouraging students to be advocates of change and build a world free from violence and discrimination.
